Summer Stories Series: Of Ghosts, Parks, and Boyfriends

As soon as I could drive, I visited my school friends in the summer months. We talked for hours. Went to parks in the dark. Considered the possibility of ghosts and boyfriends. Went swimming and made up dances in the pool.

We talked on the phone for hours, Christi and me. Kelli and April and I loved to play. Penni and I chased boys around until she had at least four of them interested in her. Our conversations started at the top, with our not-so-secret crushes, and ended up in the deepest parts of our minds.

We had summer jobs. We listened to the Beatles and the Monkees. We went to Media Play and the old Sugarhouse theater. We roasted hot dogs and marshmallows and sang along to Billy Idol at the top of our lungs.

I hope my children can experience the simplicity of summer the way I did.
